“It is not happy people that are thankful, it is Thankful people that are happy”
One way of describing our work in Smiles is that we don’t only give a ‘hand out’ to people but more importantly a ‘hand up’. We have the privilege of being witness every day to lives being changed and people receiving the care and support they deserve and to live a life with dignity.
One such person is lady Floare Popa who through the Smiles Elderly Care Home, first in Cihei and now in Oradea, was able to benefit from a new home, good care, reliable friends around her, that slowly became like her own family. Her story is special and yet so often a common one.
When we asked her about her life before she moved into our home, lady Floare answered: “I was 82 years old when the people from Smiles came one day to visit me. For many years I was living on my own because my husband died as well as my son. My life was very lonely and I was feeling rejected by my own daughter, I was desperate. I was sick but I wasn’t receiving any care or medicines, the money just wasn’t enough… ”
In 2012 when lady Floare moved into the Cihei Elderly Home she found a new family and in 2014 she moved to Oradea (ECO). She is forever thankful to God for the new life she has received and that through the Smiles Foundation, God could show His Grace in her life. As she often says: “My life has changed so much since I moved here, I am not alone anymore, all my needs are cared for and even though I can’t pay for my daily bread, nobody treats me differently. I can’t stop thanking God for the wonderful way He cares for me every single day. It is so good to be His child, this gives me hope for tomorrow”
There is one Bible verse that describes very well how God’s heart is for the good of the people and it is so true in lady Floare’s life.
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
