First Mission Trip –
Summer 2008 – June 7th – 14th
|
|
Following the events of the Grand Opening in Tileagd, a Mission week
could have been an anticlimax. Not this one! 30+ people from the
United Kingdom and America, joined forces to transform lives in a very
special way. There is always a lot to do on a Smiles Mission Trip, but
this week was going to be even busier than normal. |
 |
At the
week-end, an Ambulance donated by
St John’s in Northern Ireland has been driven across Europe by Dr
Susie Patten, Tom McNeilly and Sammy Anderson. It was full to
capacity with donated medications and more. 68 boxes to be precise and
Monday morning, some of the Mission team joined Dr Ema in Tileagd to
sort the vast amount of medications and other supplies so wonderfully
donated by the people of Northern Ireland. |
|
 |
The Mission Team step forward to sponsor a number of metal shelving
units for Dr Ema to store the supplies and the results made the
new Pharmacy Store in the Medical Complex look very impressive
indeed. |
|
We also had
a dentist on the Mission Trip – Dr Chad Bush. He’s a
specialist in extractions and sadly due to limited dental care, many
of the children and adults in our Family Care programme have pain
with teeth to live with daily. |
|
With a brand new Dental facility at the Medical Complex, Dr Chad
wanted to see if he could help. Dr Ema had a list of people needing
help, so sure enough, Dr Chad set to and arranged 4 days of dental
work in the new facility and extracted more than 100 teeth during
the week! It sounds a little rough to have extracted so many, but
the kids at Church on Sunday were so thankful to be free from the
pain they endured with bad teeth.
Thank you Dr Chad. |

 |
We were
also blessed to have two Eye doctors on the Mission Trip. Dr Jim
Watts and Dr Donna Sherrill of Jacksonville FL were first with
Smiles 2 years ago and examined 480 people during their stay.
This week, nearly 600 have been tested and where necessary, glasses
have been provided. So many tears from people who had been unable to
see for so many years. |
|
With every
patient, a Romanian Bible or New Testament was given and many just
cried as they read their bible for the first time in years. |
|
Other members
of the team decided to break a sweat in demolishing a house that would
make room for a new home as part of our Housing Project. Once
cleared, plans would start on building a new house, that one day soon
will be ‘home’ to a homeless family praying today for somewhere to
live. Thanks to those who worked so hard to provide ‘Hope’ to those
who see no way forward in their difficult circumstances. |
 |
|
 |
As with all
our Trips, we held a Holiday Bible Club / VBS during the week.
Although school were not yet out for summer, a good number of children
still came for the fun and games, crafts and activities that also
shared the Gospel message to them all.
|
|
Daily experiences included Family Care visits, Cihei Children
Centre, Gepiu Senior’s Lunch, a visit to Salard and
a chance to attend the Graduation Ceremony’s for the School and
Nursery. A special week indeed and a great start to what will be an
amazing summer. Nearly 300 people are with us this summer for Mission
Trips. |
