The Church's One Foundation –
Rev Dr. Scott Suskovic (Smiles Foundation Trustee)

Building a toiletEvery year I come to Romania, I tell myself that I will do most anything except dig holes.  Those of you who have been on mission trips to Romania know that digging holes involves a pick axe breaking up the concrete-hard ground and a shovel scooping out the chunks of earth.  When I signed up for construction the first day, you can imagine my dismay when I discovered that we had to dig holes for the outhouses.  It took all day.  The ground was hard.  The sun was hot.  And the blisters were growing by the minute.  When we were through, I looked at this 1.5 meter hole in the ground and thought, "That's the biggest and last hole I will dig in Romania."

Church foundationsThat night, however, Kevin told us about a "special project" for the following day.  It was imperative that we complete the job because of the tight construction sequence.  Four holes needed to be dug for the foundation of the new church at Tileagd.  While I looked the other way, the other members of my church eagerly raised their hands.  We were about to break ground on a church back home and they thought it was appropriate that we lay the foundation for one in Romania.  I asked, "How big?"  As Kevin described the size of the hole (1.5 meters cube), all I could think was that it was the same size hole I just dug for a toilet.
Success!IChurch foundations bowed to peer pressure and joined my fellow church members to Tileagd where it took nine of us all day to remove the rock, chip away at the ground and shovel out four immense holes at the four corners of the church.  It was hard work but we finished just about the time the cement truck rolled in to pour the concrete into our holes.  As I watched with great satisfaction as the concrete set up in our foundation, I thought about that familiar hymn, "The Church's One Foundation."  As hard as we worked on that foundation, I realized that for this church to stand, it will not be because of our holes and not because of the concrete and not because of the steel girders.  For this church to stand, it will be because of an even more sure and solid foundation than any of us could supply.

       The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord;
            She is his new creation by water and the Word.
            From heav'n he came and sought her to be his holy bride;
            With his own blood he bought her and for her life he died.
