The Smiles Foundation
Presents its Education Project
The Tileagd Community School, Kindergarten and Nursery – Romania |
|
From the Teachers…
|
From the Children… |
|
The Tileagd School Community had
its beginnings in 2003 in an old building that was previously at
Pentecostal church. There, children learnt the basic behaviour rules
and of course, how to read and write. We were happy to have that place
but it was not large enough and after 3 years the dream of having an
adequate place for education, at European standards, became a reality.

Look at what we do at school....

26 October 2006 was an important moment for the children and teachers
too. The new facility, part of the Tileagd Complex phase one, meant
more opportunities for pupils, a larger and better equipped school
more suitable for all sorts of activities. |

We start school at 8.30am when we have breakfast and
clean our teeth. We shower and change our clothes. |
|
Hygiene was a very important
lesson, and so much fun!
This event led to such a positive influence on the children's
education especially the integration of Rroma Gypsy children and
Romanian children - it has been a success! |
 |

|
We learn to read,
write and work out sums. Radu says “ My favourite lesson is
geography. I like to find places on the map.
I am very proud of my country”. |
|
In June 2008 a very special event
took place for our school, for the children and for the community: The
opening of the completed Tileagd Community Complex phase two. Attached
to the school, this includes a Church, a Medical Centre and a
Gymnasium.
Thanks to extra-school activities that our school organises for
children, they can develop their abilities and gifts. |

Look at our new Sports
Hall.
We love to play tennis. |

The children who graduated fourth
grade this year are the first generation that have had the benefit
from the experiences of education from kindergarten. There are 13
fourth graders, 8 girls and 5 boys. Their favourite class is
mathematics and then sports. |

|
|
We have a Library but
not many books yet. |
|
A role model is Florica Rostas. She
is a gypsy girl who from the start has always desired and strived to
be the best she can be - and to be the best in her class!
This pupil continues to demonstrate that learning and gaining
knowledge can take place even though her home situation is not
appropriate for study. |

We used pencil sharpenings to make these pictures. It was great fun |
|
In May 2007 and May 2008 we have
been involved in an Educational Challenge with teachers visiting from
UK and USA. Thanks to these events we have become richer: with fresh
ideas and new materials. Another is planned for May 24th - 28th 2009
and we are really looking forward to it. |
