Smiles Emergency Housing Unit – Shelter when it’s needed!
The Smiles Emergency Housing Unit has sheltered many
homeless families since it opened in 2006. For the past two years, it
has been sheltering Abused women and children from domestic violence.
How should we respond to Domestic Violence? Firstly we
need to recognise that it is becoming to be a major problem in Romania
just as other parts of the world. Secondly we must not ignore it and
we must start taking action!
There are of course different degrees of conflict and
disagreement in every relationship
but
domestic abuse refers to the most serious situations where there is a
real risk of physical, emotional and psychological harm to the adults
and children.
The EHU is a place where women will turn to in a
time of crisis and is one of the places where the abuser does not
control or restrict the feelings and the movements of the victim. We
are trying to offer to the victims that are coming, a safe haven,
where they can be secure and find peace for their selves and for their
children.
You can’t see the face of the woman that is entering in
the shelter, but she could be a mother that had to leave her home
because she could not support the abuse that she was exposed to
anymore, or she can be a women that was under constant threat. She can
be a mother that had to run from her house in the middle of the night
in order to save her life and now needs help to save her children, or
she can be a woman that had to live on the streets because her husband
evicted her. These are a few faces of the women that have been SAVED
because the EHU existed.
Thank you that in the past you helped us to save women
even if when you could not see their face yet you surely heard their
heart beating. Because you were sensitive
enough you felt
what was in the heart of those women that were looking for help in our
shelter. You felt together with them the fear, the tension, the low
self-esteem, the bruises that they carried with them. Those are the
feelings that hundreds of women are facing all over Romania. They are
looking for places where they can be safe and find comfort, peace, and
love. Some were fortunate and they had the chance to find what they
looked for in the Smiles EHU.
Now, in this difficult time, we don’t want to stop the
work that we start, but for that we need your help. Please help us to
