Nicu Musca – Urgent Spine Operation
A child within the Smiles Family Care Project

A Special Report from Angela Fetea (Social Assistant)

October 1st - Nicu’s operation is getting closer and is crucially important to be done. Nicu’s mother, Mariana, is more and more nervous. In her mind she is thinking that she doesn’t have enough money yet for the operation in her bank account, she doesn’t have anybody to help her, not even a shoulder to cry on. Nicu doesn’t know a thing about all this; his mum is acting like always with him, full of joy and hope for a better future. Day by day, they prepare themselves for something that might change Nicu’s life forever.

In early November
I talk with lady Mariana on the phone asking her about Nicu and about how she is. Finally touching the sensitive side of the financial situation. “A lot of people have promised they will help, but not many of them kept their word” said lady Mariana with a sadness in her voice.

She didn't dare yet tell Nicu that she doesn't have the money for the operation. Nicu is like always, full of life and very talkative.

I feel in her voice that she would like to ask me something but she doesn't have enough courage; she is afraid that she might be disappointed again. A few seconds later I was able to tell her that Smiles, through the generosity of other people who find out about Nicu, some of them have even met him, would like to help. For a few seconds she was again speechless, finally I ended the conversation assuring her that we will make all the arrangements for them and we will be close to her and her son.

A few days later both of them are ready and they expect the ambulance to take them to Bucharest, 12 hours of driving and travelling. A few days in the hospital for all sorts of tests and finally the great day arrives…

November 17th
- a day that Nicu will never forget, it was the day when he had the surgical operation on his spine and the great news is - It was a real Success.

Now he is able to feel and move his legs and the doctors said that with treatment they think he will soon be a normally active kid, just like one of his classmates, able to move, walk and in time, even run around.

A few days ago,  I called them again to see how things are and both of them, mother and son were very happy to hear from me and to tell me that they are more than grateful to the ones that have been close to them and suffered with them, because the day of rejoicing has come for Nicu and for all those who gave him a chance through their prayerful and financial support.

A big thank you from Nicu and God bless your generosity.
