Kilimanjaro
Challenge
Update March 2011
The team of 14
(possibly 16!) will leave on 10th July for London and then on to
Tanzania. The climb will take 6 days and the summit will be the most
gruelling but most rewarding part on day 6 of the climb.
They will awake at midnight for tea and biscuits and leave for the
summit before 1am. It will be cold and
the
terrain is mostly rock and scree. Much of the path is zigzag. They
will reach the crater itself shortly after sunrise with extremely
scenic views over the Kibo crater before continuing to the summit
itself.
Many glaciers are visible from the top and it is possible to see the
curvature of the earth. They will start the climb down on the same
day
having spent an hour on the summit. It will be a most rewarding
experience but very challenging and very hard work.
The group are happy that there are 4 doctors and one nurse on the
trip!
Our next practice outing is on Saturday 26th March.
We are hoping that the whole group
will
be able to get together for a meeting with Adventure Alternative who
administer the trip on Saturday 28th May before going on
another practice climb to the Mourne mountains.
The group are a great bunch of people and are already getting on very
well together which is important on a trip like this!
Team to date: Susanne and
Tom McNeilly, Alan McNeilly, Mark McNeilly, Davy Green, Alison Patton,
Ian Caddle, Karl Goskins, Brian McKee, Olwyn & Jonathan & Robin Guy,
Glenda McElwaine, Winifred Greeves.
