NORTHERN
IRELAND DA's REPORT - AUGUST 2010
Penny Kennedy - Development Associate Northern Ireland
The
regional development team in Northern Ireland had a team bonding day
at the end of May in the form of a
‘Duck
Derby’ followed
by a barbeque! We decided for our team meeting we would make it a more
social event and raise money for Smiles as well.

|
140 plastic ducks were
released onto the River Margy in Ballycastle
and given a chance to make a bid for freedom by escaping down the
estuary into the sea! Some of them however decided to go the opposite
direction, some went round in circles but eventually we had a plucky
outright winner! Prizes were kindly donated by local businesses in
Ballycastle and it was a good promotional day for the Smiles
Foundation as passers by wondered what on earth was going on! |

Folk from Northern Ireland
had wonderful and very moving experiences on
mission trips in June and
July. Some were
seasoned mission trippers but there were some new visitors to Romania
whose hearts were really touched by the scenes they saw and the people
they met. The June trip was focused on the
Farm
Project
with Farmers Sam and
Barbara Morrison and Florist Joanne Killen having valuable input.
Colin Beck led a team from Terrace Row Presbyterian Church in
Coleraine and described the trip as enriching for all, as those who
had been before were inspired by the progress which has been made and
new visitors were met with life changing challenges.
On 10th July brave
Betty Doherty
from North Antrim took to
the skies and raised £1,000 by doing a sky dive and valuable funds
have also been raised by bag packs and wish list days organised by
Barbara Morrison.
Myrtle Irvine from
Fermanagh organised a promotional float at the Kesh festival which
raised awareness of the Smiles Foundation along with kind donations. |
|
3 wish list days
in all were organised by Barbara and Sam Morrison and the people of
North Antrim again demonstrated their generosity by buying items from
the wish lists whilst they were doing their shopping and putting these
in trolleys for us as they left the shop. Nappies, clothes, shampoo,
crayons, notebooks and many other items were then directly placed into
boxes and into a container which left Barbara and Sam’s farm in early
August. Here is what Barbara had to say:
‘ We are excited
about this container, it only arrived on the farm while we were in
Romania, on July 3rd. We arrived home 7th July inspired and committed
to get it away quickly, and 27 days later she is leaving us! Praise
God. It is bursting at the seams and the most amazing thing is, we
could fill another 20 feet easily. Sam and I were having our Quiet
Time together this morning reflecting on this, and we can see this as
a "tangible" illustration of what God wants for us....to be filled and
overflowing with His Holy Spirit so that we are bursting at the seams,
and equipped to serve Him as He directs us. He has blessed this
container and the contents that we are overwhelmed, the response from
people has been unbelievable, supplies are still coming in. |

|
We prayed this
morning.....there is only one thing to do, that is to provide another
home for a family in Romania, that is what God wants us to do, so
watch this space, I believe we are 'going again'! God is good, all the
time, and we pray this will be a blessing to Smiles, and will extend
love to those who most need the contents in it. It is a privilege for
us to be a small part of that. We love The Smiles Foundation and all
it stands for.’
Many thanks to the
mission trippers from Worthing who helped to unpack the container! |

10 people are now
committed to the Mount
Kilimanjaro
fundraising trip next July and we had another enjoyable training
expedition to the Mourne mountains at the end of August.
All of us in Northern
Ireland are really looking forward to the forthcoming
Tileagd Choir Tour
and to meeting the new choir members. It is always a blessing to hear
the children sing and we are looking forward to hearing more about the
exciting new developments in Romania.
Some of us are going on
the pre
Christmas Mission Trip
and we can’t wait!
We would welcome anyone else who is thinking of coming to just go for
it and book their trip!
