October Already?

I can’t believe that is has been a month already.  The month of September was my first full month as Development Associate for the US. I have been meeting and talking with people about the Smiles Foundation. And what has the response been? Lots and lots of encouraging words and promises from people to pray for us.  Of course, we greatly appreciate the encouragement and the prayers, but we are certainly expecting more as we look to grow and develop our support in the US.

I’m so confident that in 2010, we’ll see increased support from the US including mission trippers, financial contributions and other forms of support. But the work we are doing right now is very important. By meeting and talking with people, we are planting the seeds that should yield a critical harvest in the very near future.

Now, I know there are many Americans who are getting the monthly newsletter and are reading this update. Let me tell you: I would love to hear from every one of you!

Send me an email, even if it is just to say hello and to let me know that you are following our work. I love getting notes from folks who tell me how they have been involved with Smiles in the past – mission trips they have taken and specific projects they have supported. So, send those emails. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Last month, I shared with you that I am training for a half marathon in November. I am running the Richmond half-marathon to support Smiles. I do have an intermediate race coming up on October 10th. I am running a 10K here in Richmond. I am working hard on my training but the donations are coming in slowly.
I need your support.

If you are in the US, you can support me at

      www.firstgiving.com/gregwillis.
If you are in the UK, you can support me at
  www.justgiving.com/Greg-Willis0.

Everyone likes to win a prize, right?                                                                                                                     Well, here is your chance to win a prize. I will be wearing a pedometer in the 10K race on October 10th. I want to see who can guess how many strides I will take in that 10K race. The closest guess will win a prize that I will personally donate – probably a gift certificate to a popular on-line retailer. Here’s the catch, if you want to be in the contest, you have to make at least a small contribution supporting me in the race (in the US at least $5 and in the UK at least £3). So make a donation and email me your guess as to the number of strides I will take. I’ll announce the winner in my November update.

By the way: Are you following us on Facebook?
Last month, I shared with you that Smiles is now on Facebook. The number of people following us on Facebook is steadily growing every day. If you are a Facebook user or know someone who is, be sure to become a fan of The Smiles Foundation at
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/The-Smiles-Foundation-Romania-UK-and-US/115006882803?ref=ts .

In the very near future, Smiles will also be up on Twitter and other social networking sites. But for now, be sure to follow us on Facebook.

Well, October will certainly be an exciting month for me. I will be travelling to the city Leeds in England for the Development Associate’s meeting and then on to Romania for some time getting re-acquainted with the people and projects there. I’m so excited about the trip that I wish I were leaving today. Please keep the meetings and our travels in your prayers this month.

In closing, let me share a verse of Scripture that has been on my heart this month. Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” This verse is such an encouragement to me and I hope it is to you. Often circumstances can be discouraging to us. But we cannot allow them to discourage us to the point of growing weary in the work. And if the work that Smiles is doing isn’t “well doing”, then I don’t know what is.

As a bit of a newcomer to Smiles, I can’t specifically tell the stories from the past 13 years as to how God has blessed the Foundation. But, I’m sure that there have been moments when folks felt a bit weary in the work. But, today, we can certainly see the harvest that has been produced from all the labors and laborers. And I believe that even greater harvests are still to come.

God has been faithful and He will continue to be faithful.

All My Best,
Greg
