Shipping Container converts to a Home for the Homeless!

When the Smiles Foundation launched the Container Challenge 2 years ago, we had no idea the impact it would have on the Operation of Smiles projects in Romania and the Lives of families living in poverty, on the streets or in collapsing mud brick shacks.
Already, 5 x 20ft Containers have been located in Salard, a community of Gypsies that Smiles has now worked with since 2007. Two more 20ft Containers will be installed in Salard this month providing seven families a safer, more stable home for many years to come.
Many of these families adore their new home and have made them truly beautiful.

We have also received tremendous supplies for Smiles projects, shipped from England in a basic 40ft metal Container. Thousands of items have been donated to families that live in urgent need of such support. Great help to the Smiles Budget has come from every day requirements being sent in the Containers, saving the Smiles Budget enormous sums of money for items that would otherwise be purchased daily.

Then the real fun begins ….. after all the supplies are distributed or stored from the Container, we can start to Convert it to a Home for a waiting family. The past couple of months, Smiles has undertaken three such major conversions and we are pleased to show something of a Picture Gallery here of the process and progress made. We have more Containers waiting to be converted but with each conversion costing £5,000 ($7,500) we need to support to maintain the programme.
