After 20 years of post communism and a free market economy, Romania
still faces numerous challenges to bring adequate financial support to
the families struggling with life which The Smiles Foundation supports
each day.
Unlike developed western nations there is very little to no welfare
even for the poorest people. Romania joined the European Union in
2007 and though some progress has been made the poor and weak continue
to suffer because of corruption, a sluggish economy, and government
inefficiencies.
The
Smiles Foundation
began its work
in Romania when Kevin Hoy (Smiles Founder and Chief Executive) along
with Welsh International Artist NIA visited Romania in
1990 just months after the fall of communism. From its simple
beginnings, today’s organisation manages over 18 active projects,
serving over 1,300 people, employing more than 60 staff in Romania,
and relies on regular giving from over 500 committed monthly
supporters.
The Foundation’s website details how the projects operate which over
the past 9 years has included infrastructure development with a
School,
Nursery,
Emergency Housing Unit,
Community Centre,
Family Crisis Facility
and a
Mission Centre
for visiting guests.
More than £4 million ($6 million) has been invested in infrastructure
assets plus £2.8 million ($4.5 million) in operational support. The
Smiles Foundation is able to manage significant resources and achieve
magnificent results.

The businesses the Foundation has the opportunity to invest in is
firstly the purchase of a
FARM
(Dairy, Pork, Poultry & Arable) with a second opportunity being the
establishment of a
HORTICULTURAL
business (growing Plants under Glass).
Also as part of the Enterprise Initiative, we plan to set-up Retail
Outlets but this will be covered later in the overall plan.
PHASE 1 – the FARM
has been purchased and all establishment costs bring the total
investment to £237,250 ($355,875).
PHASE 2 – the HORTICULTURAL GLASSHOUSE
requires Capital for set-up of £175,000 ($262,500).
The
Farm
is working with livestock
and crops. Cows for Milk and Beef, plus Pigs and Chickens, for both meat
and eggs. It is projected by the third year to produce an annual profit
of over £50,000 ($80,000) The Farm is located within practical
distance of Salonta, home to the new Joint Facility of Love
complex. It is anticipated to work up to 120 acres of quality fertile
land for crops such as Wheat, Barley, Maize and Sunflower. Expert and
experienced consultants have advised us the Business could be a prime
candidate for European Union Grants.
The Glasshouse
is proposing to be developed during 2011, with
first trading in late Summer 2011 and it is projected that by 2013,
combined with a developed and increased Farm operation, will be
contributing £100,000 ($150,000) profit per annum to be covenanted to
The Smiles Foundation to support the poor of Romania and increase
evangelistic outreach through all the Foundation’s projects.
The Smiles Foundation
wants to ensure the FARM can operate efficiently and be able to
immediately develop the Glasshouse project. To facilitate this we need
to raise the total Capital requirement of £400,000 / $600,000 by way of
Donation or Loan.
Having moved ahead in faith, Smiles must now meet the terms of the
purchase agreement for Land and the Glasshouse with the following
payments within the next 120 days.
