July 2017 will go down in Smiles history as the month when we responded to another need in Romania, by opening the Tileagd Assisted Living Facility (TAL).
When we open something new, after all the cost of building/renovation, we start to have new costs for operating. A new budget is added to our monthly need.
So in order to help those in need who are now our residents, we appointed more staff – a physiotherapist, two nurses, four carers, two cooks, and a cleaner. These are in addition to our Project Manager, Social Worker and Administrator. As I said in my last report, at the beginning of July the first residents came and at the moment we care for 12 residents, two more than we anticipated in our first month. Even though the demand is bigger, we decided not to have too many in the first month because we wanted to make sure the new staff can care for all their needs and know each one individually and not be overwhelmed by numbers.
The plan for August is to employ 2 more nurses so we will have medical cover 24/7 along with two more carers and in this way we will have 2 on the day shift and two at night enabling more people to benefit from the care we offer that they so desperately need. But having more staff of course increases the budget and at the moment we don’t know from where the money will come, but we know we have a calling and that is to care for the people in need and we believe God will provide everything we need in order to fulfill our calling.
At the moment 2 of the 12 people that we care for are social cases and we need to raise more support for them, especially that one who came in the first week was in a very bad medical condition. Dr Diana took him to the hospital and he will need surgery to save his life. He has been before to the hospital but being a social case nobody wanted to treat him. Now, with our support, he will have the care and treatment he needs. He was in great pain and the doctor decided to amputate one leg and in this way his life will be saved and we pray now for healing, not just physical but spiritual too. For him and others who need special help, we will have from August psychological support. He will need help to deal with his emotions having to adjust to this new life. Pastor Vasile is here every Thursday having a programme at the centre and then he spends individual time with those that need more counselling and want prayer. Every Sunday all those that want can attend church and we are glad to have every Sunday our residents in the church. It’s nice to have the church next door to the centre. We believe that God will work in their lives and many others to give complete healing for body, mind and spirit.
More than a year ago we had a visit from a member of the European Parliament to Salonta at our JFL centre. We discussed about the difficulties that we face in our work and one of the many issues that were discussed was that we lack specialist beds. We had received donations from the UK, but we always needed more. A few months ago the MEP called me saying that he could supply a few beds from Austria. I was surprised to hear from him because even I forgot about the discussion! He told me he will send them soon, but to be honest I didn’t put too much hope in him, but the timing was very good as we were furnishing the new centre in Tileagd, and needed a few more beds in Salonta and Oradea too. Sure enough, last week they arrived and today they are being cleaned and moved into rooms by our wonderful volunteers from Worthing. As I was reporting earlier in the year, Rebeca (our social worker from Salonta JFL Centre) started a new programme to encourage students from the local high schools to become volunteers and spend time every week with the elderly from the centre. This past month Kevin (The Smiles Foundation Chief Executive) invited all the volunteers to a special evening to show the appreciation that we have for the work they do. 23 volunteers were able to respond to the invitation and it was a great time together having pizza, with each of them having the possibility to ask questions and they had all kinds of curiosities about the organisation and Kevin! But as always, he had an answer for every question!!
It was a great evening and we are glad to see youth getting involved and having an interest in helping others. This program is very beneficial for both sides. Our elderly enjoy spending time with the youth, to tell them stories from their lives, even mentoring them and for the volunteers it is good to use their free time with people that need their help.
Thank you all for fulfilling the role that God gave you in this mission of helping the people of Romania, we will never be able to thank you enough or repay what you do, but I know that God will bless you more than you can imagine.
With much appreciation
Deputy Director of Smiles Romania
