The projects within Smiles 300 Grow Club are
overseen by our Director of Operations – Maria Hava.
Maria is our longest serving employee in Smiles
and has been involved with the work and community in Tileagd since she
joined in 2003. At one point Tileagd was Smiles biggest and most
demanding project and always has a challenging dimension due to the
cultural and historical issues of the Gypsy Community in Tileagd. |

Tileagd Community Support Project
is managed by Maria with
the assistance of Community Leader – Guiry Rostas. The nature of
the
Gypsy Community is to be a little transient, with families often
moving around but ultimately come back to home base in Tileagd. This
community of largely uneducated adults means work is limited as well
as coping with the prejudice against them as people or their culture.
There are daily needs, some very serious, within the Community which
present continuous difficult challenges to Maria and Guiry.

Tileagd Craft Project
is overseen and managed by Maria with assistance from Meda Rostas. The
objective is simply to provide a means for uneducated women to provide
some tangible support for their family needs. The women are encouraged
to make Craft Items that can be sold with all the proceeds going to
the women for food and family needs.

Project

Tileagd Educational Project
is one of the longest serving
projects within Smiles and first established as a need in 2001.
Following the Smiles Founder & CEO meeting a boy begging in the City
of Oradea who was traced back to Tileagd, it was agreed with the
community to establish a School to help educate the children who at
the time, did not attend any type of school elsewhere.
The first School was opened in 2003
followed by a Nursery the following year. In 2006 a much larger school
and kindergarten was facilitated in the newly built Smiles Complex
along with a Gymnasium, Medical Centre and Church that was opened in
2008. Since 2012, Smiles has partnered with the Romanian State to
better integrate the Gypsy Community students with the national system
and the State School. Sometimes delicate and challenging issues have
to be faced but the significant improvement of an educated community
can be seen clearly by those who visit.
