Report from Georgi Opreanu, Director of Elderly Care

"I always want to stay near God!"

A year ago, I starting writing my reports and at that point I was wondering if I will have something to report each month. Now I have another problem, what to choose from so many things that are happening in our two centres every month.

This month I want to share with you a story of a very dear lady to me, Lady Maria Rosu. She came initially in the Cihei Elderly Centre in 2012 from Tinca, because she could not care for herself anymore and she didn’t want to be a burden on her daughter who was working in Oradea.

Once she came, she was one of the most optimistic ladies in the centre. Every day she was walking 100 steps, because the doctor told her this will help her to stay healthy. She really enjoyed the time spent with us and we really enjoyed her presence. She loved to sing, she always had a song for us when we visited her. When Mioara, the social worker at the Cihei Elderly Centre got married, she could not imagine Lady Maria not participating in the wedding. She asked her daughter to take her to the church and at the end, she really wanted to have a song, because she could not imagine a wedding, without that particular song.

When we opened the centre in Oradea she moved there, together with other residents from Cihei. Recently she had a lot of pain and her medical situation was not too good. She loves church and fellowship and didn’t miss any of the chances that she had to participate in the fellowship program that we have at ECO every Tuesday. At age of 81, she went to be with her Lord that she served on this earth.

During her staying with us, one particular song she was singing all the time, was the very old hymn saying that:

"I always want to stay near God, no matter how hard my troubles will be and no matter how much I will suffer my song will always be: I always want so stay near God. And then, when I will finish my life here on earth, and in eternity I will be with my Lord, I will be so blessed with my beloved Lord, I always want to stay near God."

This was her desire and now she is with her beloved Lord. At the funeral, together with Maria, Mioara and Nelu we sang this song and we felt so blessed to be a part of this beautiful lady’s life.

Because many of you were willing to help The Smiles Foundation every month, we were able to be a part of this wonderful lady’s life and show her the love that God has for each of us.

In February, the Elderly Centre Oradea had 34 residents and with the enquiries being received, the centre will soon be full. We are amazed by the requests that we have, but it also brings a big pressure on us, to select those people that really need our help.

We celebrate this month the birthdays of 3 gentlemen: Dumitru 81 years, Iosif 78 years and Tiberiu 79 years. We pray for good health for all of them.

In Salonta, at the "Doris" Elderly Centre we had 28 residents, but unfortunately one resident died after just 2 weeks with us. He was 87 years old and had many health problems. The family thanked us for the care that he received and were very sorry that they didn’t bring their father before, so he could receive good care for longer.

Here, we had a month of many celebrations, we had 5 birthday parties. We celebrated lady Maria – 87 years old and her husband Gavril – 82 years old, lady Floare – 73 years, and two gentleman: Lov -78 years and Grigore – 83 years.

At the local church was a revival week and two more residents decided to follow Jesus and they will be baptised in May. We praise the Lord for His Grace that He shows to us, even to our grey hair.

My God bless all of you and bring you much joy and happiness!

Prayer points:

  • For God to prepare the new residents that will came in the centres and experience the love of God thru the care we provide;
  • For the new resident to adapt in the centres;
  • For staff to have a loving and caring heart for those in need;
  • For health and well-being for residents and staff as last month we had many with flu;
  • For money for day to day activities;
  • For all Smiles staff be able to show Gods love so others will get to know HIM.

Please pray for us because when you pray God hears more than what you say, answers more that we ask, gives more than we can imagine in His own time and in His own way.

With great appreciation,

Georgi
