June 2016

A calling....

On May 1st, the day we sang praises to God for His faithfulness toward JFL2, my devotional reading was 1 Corinthians 15:58
"Give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord." The writer commented; ‘A career may end with retirement and lots of toys; a calling doesn’t end until you die’.

I couldn’t help but enjoy the ‘wow’ moment as I looked around this amazing place we call JFL 2, enjoying its peace and beauty. I walked around and around and around; every room filled my mind with opportunity. And as I watched a lovely lady who is living with Dementia peacefully asleep on a chair in the foyer with a huge smile on her face, my heart swelled ....... friends, we have work to do! We have an opportunity to make a difference.

JFL2 is open, our brothers & sisters are waiting. Will you join me? We need to work very hard; it’s important that all our projects function comfortably and successfully. We have many to reach with love and hope, new beginnings and happier endings. Will you join me, and ‘give yourself fully to the work of the Lord...... with Smiles?’

How? A fundraiser, presentations, new monthly sponsors, invite people to join us on Mission. The Mission Trip season is upon us, pray for everyone going this year; that together we can make a significant difference. Please do something!

Lucy is just home from her first trip.....

"Last month I experienced my first Mission Trip with The Smiles Foundation - what an experience it was! I travelled alone feeling quite nervous, not knowing what to expect or who I would be meeting. Arriving at Budapest airport, I met up with a lovely group of people wearing Smiles Shirts who had been on many Mission Trips & I immediately felt at ease. En route to Romania the team told me about the work they had carried out previously, they enlightened me and filled me with enthusiasm- I couldn't wait to get stuck in!

One day I visited poor families to check on their welfare and provide them with food. I also visited the elderly in two of the Smiles nursing homes when we took some of the residents out for a walk in the park which is something they can’t do without the assistance of Mission Trippers. Nursing Homes are rare in Romania, so without Smiles many of these old folk would have been abandoned. One of my favourite days was construction. I helped prepare the foundations of a new home in Rapa to replace unstable mud houses, one of 10 new houses to support these families.

The trip was an emotional rollercoaster. I was sad when it came to an end and I didn't want to go home, but then I realised that this wasn't the end it is actually the beginning for me! I plan to carry on supporting Smiles in England and I already have my heart set on returning for another trip next year."

I want you to read Luke’s story;

Colossians 3:23-24 "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."

HI – I’m Luke Wathen. From April this year to April 2017 I am living in Bihor County, Romania, working with The Smiles Foundation. This is an amazing opportunity to do exactly what the verse from Colossians says; "work for the Lord".

"Serving" could mean doing pretty much anything, and as I now realise, doing anything in any place. For me, it will involve working in the range of incredible projects that Smiles runs here on a daily basis.

If you are not familiar with the projects, I encourage you to take a few moments browsing the website to see the differing types of care and short/long term support for people who are in need. Elderly care, homeless, a school and nursery, community support, church and Family care are just a few. I am praying that I can contribute to these projects according to the needs and the skills I may be able to bring.

Some of you may think that a year is a long time to do this and you would be right! However, I believe the Lord put Smiles on my heart around 11 years ago when I first saw the Tileagd Children’s Choir in Gorsley as part of a UK Tour. At the time, I did not realise the level of importance that Smiles would become in my life, but I am learning more and more every day with God.

I have no shame in admitting that I was nervous about what God was saying to me, but in August 2011, I came to Romania on my first Mission Trip. Seeing Smiles work first-hand, and meeting the incredible staff who share God’s love through word and action every day, both inspired and challenged me to dig deeper into what my role with Smiles might be.

Now my year in Romania is the continuation of that process, and while I do not know exactly what I will be doing every day, I do know that I am ‘serving God’ and I will experience amazing roller-coasters of emotions and events. Please pray for me, and all the Smiles staff who work daily in their projects. Pray for the continuing wonderful work ‘for the Lord’ in this place.

May the Lord bless you! Luke
