Report from Georgi Opreanu, Director of Elderly Care

Be a testimony of Godís LoveÖ
wherever you areÖ
whatever you do!

For me, May was a very special month, for many reasons.

I will start with the last event and the most important from my point of view. On May 24th, two more of the residents from "Doris" Elderly Centre in Salonta were baptised at the local church, together with three other people. Mrs. Valeria who is 73 years, came into our centre with her husband last year in April. When she was young, she was going to church, but after she married, she didnít care too much about God and now in her old age, she found God again. Mr. Iov, 78 years old came to the centre eight months ago. He has family, but the relationships between them are broken and they didnít communicate for more than a year.

Before he decided to come in the centre, he visited us several times, because he wasnít convinced to come. He tried to "bribe" me (nicely) to give him the best room and the best roommates! He was very surprise when I turned the offer down, because he thought that with money he can obtain whatever he wants. When I told him that I wonít take his money because I have a God and everything I do, I do it for Him and I need to be fair to everyone, he said to me very warily "donít tell me that you are a believer, because I donít like them!"

He tried to "bribe" other staff in the centre and everyone sticks to the principle of treating everyone fair. A month later, he moved into the centre and he was amazed by the way he is treated and the fact that he doesnít need to give money to the carers to be treated well.

During his testimony in front of the church, he told everyone he could not stay away from Godís love when he had seen it so practically in the lives of those that work in the centre. The only regret that he has now is he didnít take the decision to follow Jesus 40 years ago, so he could serve Him with all his power.

As I said earlier, the family do not keep in touch. If you want to be his family, you can adopt him and send him a letter of encouragement. If you want to go the extra mile you can contribute to the cost of his staying in the centre. He is short £100 ($150) each month between his pension and the costs of his care. He doesnít understand how he can be in the centre when he doesnít have the money, but he knows that God takes care of him, as He loves him so much to have given His precious life for him. Maybe through you we can help cover the cost of Mr Iov!

In both centres we celebrated birthdays and we are so happy that our residents can celebrate their birthday with their new friends. We wish Happy Birthday to: Valeria Ė 73 years, Ionel Ė 81 years, Iuliana Ė 83 years, Floare - 87 years. May God bless them all with good health and happiness.

At our Elderly Centre Oradea (ECO) we care at the moment for 38 residents and we expect a few more to come in June. Unfortunately we lost 3 this past month and we pray that God will be with their families and give them peace in their loss. Lady Bac (86 years) she came to us in March after a severe stroke and after that had to go several times in the hospital. Mr Farago (93 years) came with his wife in February and his wife died last month and after that he was missing her a lot. Mr. Nick Gheorghita (81 years) came in the centre in February together with his lovely wife. For us they were a real example, and especially lady Cornelia in the way she cared for her husband and served with faithfulness. We praise God for people like them.

For the last 2 weeks God blessed us with Lorna, a volunteer from UK, who was a physiotherapist and did great treatment with the residents at both centres with very good results. She worked very hard and we thank her for all her effort and support and we hope she will come again to Romania. We also we had nine Romanian hairdressers that came as volunteers and pampered all the residents from Oradea, we thank them for all their effort and we hope they will come again in a few months.

Another reason why May was special for me - Winston Churchill said "To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour"

My special moment was 10 years ago when I joined Smiles, I wasnít really prepared or qualified, but God knew the future better than I did, and I am glad that I didnít turn my back to something that is very unique: to be able to help others, to give them a chance to change their destiny, to be able to show Godís love.

In May 2005 I started with God an adventure that I didnít think would be more than a summer, as I felt Ďunprepared and unqualifiedí. God put the people around me, blessed me immensely and gave me the help that I needed to do the job that He gave me, to fulfil my calling.

I am thankful to God for all the people that were part of my life during these years and I learn a lot from themÖto believe, even if I donít see the solution, to work hard for the people that are in need, with commitment, to continue and not give up, even when no sight for any reward. Thank you everyone for supporting the work of Smiles, just because of you we can do the work and I can celebrate 10 years of giving hope and smiles to the Romanian people.

My God bless you and help you to be a testimony of His love!

With great appreciation,

Georgi Opreanu
Director of Elderly Care

 Prayer points:

  • For God to prepare the new residents that will come in the centres and experience the love of God through the care we provide;
  • For the new residents to adapt to life in the centres;
  • For having the financial support to pay the staff and care for residents;
  • For staff to have a loving and caring heart for those in need;
  • For health and well-being for residents and staff as last month we had many with flu;
  • For money to do the day to day activities;
  • For all Smiles staff to be a testimony of Godís love so others will get to know HIM.

Please pray for us because when you pray God hears more than what you say, answers more that we ask, gives more than we can imagine in His own time and in His own way.
