Christmas Joy!

The month of December was of course under the sign of Christmas, there was a lot going on in all our projects and this of course is to be expected having so many people we help one way or another. We have had many special visits, presents for everybody and many songs to share. Above all, we enjoyed taking the good news of Christ’s Birth everywhere! And we were happy to remind everyone about this greatest evidence of God’s love for humankind.

Last month was a great month! Presents and Christmas songs all over, but most of all, it was great to have the opportunity to talk about our Lord and Saviour. Christmas is always a good time for that and people are receptive, because who can say ‘no’ to it in the midst of such a joyful season!?

We were blessed to be part of several activities in December that were meant to either raise support for our projects or to raise awareness. This included the Oradea Christmas Market where Smiles had a special stand to sell products made by our beneficiaries, to serve tea and to distribute fliers. We produced a very nice and informative leaflet that told everybody about the true significance of Christmas and also informed the readers about Smiles, who we are and what we do. We strongly believe that people need to be reminded what Christmas is all about, what is beyond the commercial Santa, Christmas trees and songs like "Last Christmas I gave you my heart". And we believe we have succeeded, as about 10,000 leaflets were distributed during the whole month and we noticed people did read it. I think also the bright red colours helped a bit, but the content inside was very good and clear.

There were a lot of gifts given in the communities we work, to the families, to the elderly and homeless. And of course, to the children in school and nursery. The smiles on their faces, the excitement to see what is inside the SOS’s and shoeboxes were also very rewarding! And made us so very glad we can be part of what the Christmas season is about. Giving gifts to acknowledge God’s GIFT to us.

We have also been blessed this past month with the opportunity to go and visit some of the places where we have been organising special HBC/VBS programmes through the summer of 2015, for distributing some presents to the children we met then. It was a great chance for all of us to renew our friendship and sure enough, more promises were made for next summer! I hope we’ll be able to keep our word, they will most certainly not forget!

We also took the opportunity to visit some new places. New and old, as some are long-time friends – we visited the Down Syndrome Association, the special school for children with mental disabilities, some of the families who have severely disabled children in foster care, some churches, more families… We enjoyed every visit and the best was seeing how much the kids enjoyed receiving these presents! Indeed Christmas is much nicer this year for many of them.

I’d like to take this opportunity to remind us all about the greatest gift of all times – the Son of God coming in our world, to make the WHOLE difference. This gift is made once in your life and the joy of receiving it will last forever. What an amazing thought! Who would say no to this? All the other gifts are only because of this one, all the other joy is only because of this one.

Let us all not forget for a minute what is really important and what effect this has in our lives! Also, I’d like to say Thank you for all of your support in 2015 and we are looking forward for a new year that will continue to change many people’s lives. 2016 will be a great year, as we are together in the most amazing and exciting adventure for changing the world.

Might not be the whole world, but it will be for someone’s world!

With sincere appreciation,

Adi Matis
