Maria’s Desk …. Director of Operations, Romania

September has gone! I’m sitting in my office wondering where time goes?? It is so good that I’m not in charge of that … But one thing I know for sure: God IS and I do not need to worry about anything because HE is already there and knows all the situations that I will have to face!

How was September for me?? Busy! The last update report I wrote from the road! We were in UK with the children’s choir visiting schools and churches! We had a great time…. We shared our stories with lots of children and people…some heard for the first time, some knew it better than us but ALL were interested in the work God is doing through us here in Romania. I would like to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH to ALL that organise this tour, to all the people and kids that gave up at their time in order to come to hear us! Thank you to all the families that host us and feed us! Thank you Dawn for all the hard work you put in. I do not have words to say the thank you to Mr Hoy…thank you for not giving up! Even if the pain in the leg was very bad and the schedule busy, thank you for sticking at it….I’m sure you have a big reward in heaven.

On September 13th, we came back home ready for the new academic year! The kids were excited to start “their new adventure". So, the next morning, they were ready to go to school, meet their colleagues and teachers! I went to Tileagd to see how things were there and I felt sooo encouraged when I saw them ALL neat and ready for their first day! Please pray for them…pray for wisdom and for them to stay “focused on the job”. Pray for the teachers and pray for the leaders! Please, please pray for the funding for the school and nursery. There are sooooo many changes in the Romanian laws and it puts great pressure on us too, even if we are a private foundation. For example, the State School cut their budgets and salaries of the teachers and all staff with 25% and that produced lots of changes in the system. They had to give up providing the school bus that transported the kids from the villages around Tileagd to the school. This affected our kids too. We are stuck in the middle now, because we have nearly 20 kids that are in 5 to 8 grade and need transport. If we don’t provide it, we risk the kids giving up, especially as the winter comes, asking them to walk 30-40 minutes each way is too much, and can be dangerous.

But what can we do?? We have a dream, that like many others we had seems IMPOSSIBLE but I’m sure that with God’s help our dream can be possible too. What is it??

Well for the people that visited us this summer and had to be driven in our cars know the situation of some Smiles cars and the roads of our country. We have a minibus, 9 seats, that is in Smiles from 2001. During all these years, we invested lots of money in repairs in order to keep that car on the road. At the moment we use the car for all the projects but for the last 2 weeks we decided to give the car to the school to transport only the kids from 5 to 8 Grade to the state school and then back to our Complex to do their homework. On October 20th the M.O.T. Inspection for the car expires and we will be stuck in the middle, again…In order to make it work for the winter we need nearly £2500 ($3,750) to repair it in order for the car to be working in proper conditions that we can drive kids in it! For such an old vehicle, I do not believe this would be a good investment of money. So, my dream is to raise enough money in order to buy a better minibus, second hand one, that can be used by the School in Tileagd. Also, the church will use this minibus whenever they need it….so PLEASE pray with me in order to see this dream a reality!

We need around £15,000 ($22,500) in order to get a good one! We can get an average OK one for £10,000 ($15,000). Please - if you would like to donate any amount of money for School Transport, you can do so by following this link.

What else is going on in Romania, and on my desk?? Well, because Mr Hoy is away in UK, recovering after the knee operation that he had on September 17, I had to complete the purchase of Salonta building without him here. It was scarey, but I’m happy now that it is all done! Praise God for that and THANK YOU to all of you that respond to that challenge! Please continue to pray as the hard work now starts…..To be honest with you after the completion of Tileagd project and the fact that we did not take on a big building project, I had enough time to fill my batteries and I’m ready and excited now to start a new one.

I’m happy that I have the team that I have because without them I could not do my job. Each of them is important in their position and they do a great job for the people we serve. Please pray for my team, all of them. The winter is getting close here in Romania, the cold weather is starting to make its presence and the needs will get bigger day by day. There are so many people out there that need our support! Please Pray for God’s wisdom and power over us!

Now we are getting ready for a new mission trip…….so another chance to present our work to the people that come to Romania. Another “life changing experience” for the people that come and for the people we serve!

So my friend, lots to talk about, but I will stop here. Thank you for the encouragements that I receive each month from you through e-mails, letters, and face to face! Is great to know that out there are so many people that are supporting me and the work of Smiles in their prayers.

Before I say “bye till next month”, I would like to leave you with a bible verse that Adi read as an encouragement for us in our office devotional meeting from September 14th, the first day when we all came back from tour, holiday and other personal things we all had happening. The verse is from Galatians 6: 7-10 and says:

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

My brothers and sisters in Christ - friends, keep doing the great work you do…God will bless us, because He promised us!

Sincerely, Maria
