prayer and praise
While paying for diesel the other day, I was
surprised to see Mini Easter Eggs in a basket at the check- out. I
looked around wondering had I missed a season, or has the world just
gone totally mad? What on earth are they doing; clearing old stock,
confusing customers or planning and preparing for Easter?
Life can be like this ... planning
and preparing for the next thing. It made me think about
our dear friends in Romania; maybe ‘preparing’ for their next meal.
This might arrive with Nelu or Raul on their next scheduled visit, it
might be something from a neighbour’s garden, maybe from the bins in
the street, or it might not be today at all, maybe not even tomorrow!
I cannot forget the people I meet on Mission
in Romania just because I am not there, & I know many of you feel the
same. My thoughts have lead me to invite you to ‘plan & prepare’
something into your schedule for Smiles this coming season.
In Northern Ireland we have spent August
‘preparing’ our next Truck of Aid which will leave us in
This is our very own ‘Smiles Truck’,
very kindly donated to us and complete with our Logo and contact
details. Thank you for responding to our appeal for Aid to both Leeds
and NI; for packing boxes and delivering essentials. It takes many
people working together continually to complete these loads and send
them off on their journey. Can you help in any way to gather stock,
pack boxes, deliver loads and encourage your friends to support?
Smiles need all the supplies we can get to them.
This month I introduce Student Ambassador
Elishka Coupar who has written to me. She trained hard for the
London Triathlon as a fundraiser to support Smiles. Thank you Elishka,
for your tremendous effort ... (and Dad too!)
the moment I am in my first year of college and have recently been
reflecting on the time I spent in Romania, I remember when we visited
Salard and I was sad to hear that only a minority of the young people
were able to go to school. I was thinking about how privileged we are
in the UK to have such great opportunities. So I would love to help
raise awareness in my college and schools nearby about all the
children who would love to have an education like ours, and hopefully
encourage my college to possibly sponsor a child. I have been doing a
few fundraising activities here and there but I want to increase what
I am doing! I decided to volunteer because I feel, since my trip to
Romania, I haven't stopped reflecting on the experience so by
being involved in the Smiles foundation will enable me to act on what
I experienced and hopefully share Christ and make a difference to
some people's lives.
At the beginning of August, my Dad and I
completed the London Triathlon. I came second in my age group (17- 19
years). Thank you to everyone who supported, we raised £827.57
($1,076) ...... praise God!
Are you a student, been on a Mission Trip
and would like to do a little more to help Smiles? Please get in
touch, I will be delighted to hear from you.
Yesterday I had a letter from a 7 year old
..... "I would like
to tell you something. I wanted to do something to help Smiles, so I
did a little something for you. I gathered up all of my and Eli’s (wee
brother) toys and books, and labelled them with prices. And did a car
boot sale and put together £90. ($117) And can I tell you this? I
would like to give my money to Rapa. And next year I will come to help
you build more homes there. Lots of love from Lucy Linton."
I was so touched by this little lady’s
heart, thank you Lucy. Just take note of what a 7 year old can do.
Please start planning your Autumn events
for Smiles! Contact me for support or ideas. It is a great time of
the year to fundraise; maybe a Christmas Concert, Car Boot Sale, Craft
Fair, School Concert, Office Collection or Church Coffee Morning. How
about a Smiles Presentation to your Church or Community Group?
Last month, I hope you remember I wrote
about the importance of being on Mission alongside the staff. If the
Easter Eggs are in the shops already, it’s time to start planning
your 2017 trip to Romania!
Finally, remember the
Smiles Staff Tour! Check out your
nearest venue, and ‘plan’ to BE THERE. Please tell your friends and
bring them with you. Let’s welcome our Romanian guests to UK with
packed halls and united hearts. Come to hear their updates and
stories, join in worship together and encourage each other in the work
we do, whatever your involvement.
Galatians 6:9 "Let us not
become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a
harvest if we do not give up."
Thank you for reading and for being a part
of Smiles, see you on Tour!
