Report from Georgi Opreanu,
Director of
Elderly Care

Little Acts of Kindness

Small acts of kindness when multiplied can transform the world. When we are kind to each other, we donít really know the impact that we have on the other person but in this way we can make this big world a better place.

In this report, I want to encourage you my dear friends from different parts of the world that when you are kind and generous in your giving to the Smiles Foundation, you are not alone and your gift together with others has changed some worlds!

I know that the Smiles Foundation is helped in many ways by people from outside of the country, but this month I wanted to encourage you by sharing that Romanians begin to open their hearts towards elderly and this has surprised me in a nice way.

Little acts of kindness have happened these last few months in both our elderly centres. From small things to big things, everything makes a difference. A neighbour bringing some fruits, a farmer donating 60litres of milk a week, a pastor preparing sandwiches for breakfast, the physiotherapist donating a day of service each week, an owner of a second hand store bringing wheel chairs, walking sticks, and crane for making the transfer from bed to chair easier, a member of staff bringing flowers to the residents, a nephew coming and giving a guitar concert, an Elder from the church listening to their problems and worries and encouraging the residents. All these things are so important for us all, first because we know we are not alone in this work, somebody else cares about the elderly and makes an effort to show kindness to them and then because we know that God is blessing us through small things, we know He also has big surprises for us.

One of the big surprises for me was when a cardiologist that had her mother-in-law in the Oradea centre, called our doctor a few weeks after her mother-in-law died to ask if she can come in the centre to consult everyone and give an EKG for all the residents that need it. This act of kindness impressed me so much, because I realise that not all the time people will be ready to donate money, but they find ways with their skills that God gave them to offer back to those in need.

Because of you, we could celebrate more birthdays this month and I am so sorry that you canít be here, to see the joy on their faces. If you will be here you will know for sure that all the sacrifice that you do in giving is so much appreciated.

In Doris Centre, Salonta we celebrate Maria S. (77 years) and Minerva (80 years), they both have been residents since October 2013, two of the longest residents in the centre. In Oradea we celebrate Maria Z.(82 years), Virag (75 years), Petru (76 years), Maria M. (79 years), Ecaterina K.(72 years), Maria T. (80 years), Maria I. (64 years), Elisabeta B. (80 years), Floare (84 years), Eli (72 years).

I think this was the month with the most celebrations. I am writing this in each report because of two reasons: for the elderly it is one of the most special days in the year because the feel the love when we celebrate their life, and the second reason is for you to pray for them and ask Godís blessing in their life.

In the two centres at the moment we care for 66 residents and 4 more are planning to come in the first half of October and we pray to God to be able to do the best job we can do, because we want to do it for them and for Him.

Because of you, who are all doing little acts of kindness towards our elderly, lady Iren (74 years) will not sleep on the streets of Oradea this winter, lady Viorica (73 years) will not suffer the cold because she canít afford from her pension to pay for wood, Mr. Carol will not feel abandoned by this family because he has found another family and friends in his new "home", lady Ecaterina (72 years) that we just celebrate will get the treatment that she desperately needs and she doesnít have a family to care for the costs, lady Floare (85 years) will not spend another day alone in her house thinking she will die of loneliness as in 3 months just one person came to visit her, lady Ely (72 years) will not spend the Christmas alone to mourn her husband but hear the carols and find strength to continue life. The list can continue, because so many are in need and they are benefiting from your kindness.

So please donít stop being kind, continue to support us and your little act of kindness towards those in need is not wasted but is life changing.

Why to continue? Because in doing simple acts of kindness to others, you show Godís love to others and in the end this is our Calling. Without you, the puzzle is not complete, if any of you is not doing what God called you to do and not showing kindness to those in need, maybe Ecaterina will not be treated any more, Floare will need to go back home and continue to live in loneliness, Ely will get depress and nobody will even see that.

If you are supporting the Smiles Foundation and wonder if you made a difference, come and see some lives changed because of your little act of kindness!

Also, a special thank you to all of you that contributed to the container that came, I saw a lot of so many needed things that came in it that will make our residents life so much better.

Many thanks for changing the world for so many and I pray that God will show his kindness to you all that are ready to be His servants.

Until my next report be kind with one another!

With great appreciation,

Georgi Opreanu
eputy Director of Smiles Romania
