Report from Georgi Opreanu, Director of Elderly Care

The special time of the year ....

Another year has gone by and now is that time of the year when families come together to celebrate. Unfortunately, not everyone has a family to celebrate with or celebrate for the right reason. In our two centres, we tried to bring the right spirit of Christmas. Through everything we did, our desire was to celebrate Jesus.

As we prepared for this special period, we had to face the death of one of the longest residents in our Salonta Centre – Viorica Negrut. Before she came to the centre, Lady Viorica lived in an old, damaged house, alone in a village not too far from Salonta. She came to the centre because she needed care and a safe place to live. She didn’t have close family and soon after she came she became part of our new family, she wasn’t alone anymore.

Last year the Christmas concert was on December 12, exactly on the day when we celebrated her birthday, so we sang for her and she felt so loved. This year the concert was on her birthday again, but she was not there to celebrate, but we remembered her and we celebrated her life and prayed to God to help us to be wise in how to spend our days, as they are not ours. I know that the time she spent with us she felt the love of Christ through our staff. We were blessed to have the opportunity to care for her.

December is after all, the month of happiness and joy and so many people came to bring the joy for the elderly in their new home.

At ‘Doris Centre’ Salonta, first we had coming with the Good News the teenagers from Gepiu Centre. They wanted to do something for others in a Smiles project, and they chose us. They prepared a very nice programme, but also they bring ginger bread for everyone.

We then had our annual Charitable Concert "Home for Christmas" and this year we decide
d to have as singers, local people from the Church. It was such a blessed time and we were so happy that this time families of the residents came and enjoyed time together with the elderly.

But maybe the children from the local school had the greatest impact. After a very nice program, the children talk
ed with the elderly and there was not a dry eye in the house. Children always have a special place in the heart of the elderly.

Another special day was on 26th when we had a Christmas programme and 16 mission trippers together with Kevin brought the Good News and reminded us that we are never alone because we have Jesus.

December was a special month in the Oradea Centre too. To write about every event will make my report to long so I will mention just a few and anyway, pictures speak more than a thousand words. Like last year, we had the Adona Bell Choir, it was like heaven had come on earth that night, so special.

On Christmas day, after lunch together with the mission team that chose to spend this special time of the year with us, we had a special service for the elderly and they felt so good that at the end of it nobody wanted to leave the room. God’s Presence was there with us. Many children came carolling and special bonds were made between them.

I love December, I wish every month could be December…and I pray not everyone will save their love for Christmas day.

Special thanks to everyone that helped us to make this time of the year a special time for others, especially for the mission trippers that choose to spend Christmas in a different way. My God bless you in a special way.

May God’s blessing be upon you and your families as we enter into a new unknown year.

 Prayer points:

  • Thank God for a special December, that brings a lot of joy in our peoples hearts.
  • For the years that are to come, to not give up when it is hard but to continue doing good for God's glory, even when people around us will want to destroy what we do.
  • For God to prepare the new residents that will come in the centres and experience the love of God through the care we provide;
  • For the new residents to adapt in the centres;
  • For the future accreditation for "Doris Centre", Salonta.
  • For God's protection upon all of Smiles staff and beneficiaries;
  • To have money to be able to pay the staff and all the associated costs
  • For staff to be kind to those in need;
  • For health and well-being for residents and staff as we enter in the cold months;
  • For all Smiles staff to be a testimony of God’s love so others will get to know HIM.

Please pray for us because when you pray God hears more than what you say, answers more that we ask, gives more than we can imagine in His own time and in His own way.
