Celebration for an Eternal Future

We believe that life is not only about what we have and who we are here on this Earth. Rather we believe this life is really only the beginning of a never ending eternity. This could take us into the territory of religious debate, but that is not our purpose – the belief in Jesus Christ is well above and beyond any religion. Because of that, we are never promoting anything other than a personal relationship with Him and we are so happy to see people getting to understand the truth and committing their lives to the Lord.

This is no doubt a worthy reason for celebration! In the end, this is the ultimate purpose of all we are doing, anything else could almost be called ‘simply added benefits’. All the social projects we run in Romania do represent an excellent response to difficult situations people go through and the fact that we can give them a helping hand is a great support, but eventually all this support will make little difference if there is nothing more to it. Beyond the food, clothing and medicine, houses or shelter, counselling and assistance, we want people to understand God’s love for them and to respond accordingly. And when that happens, we know there is success!

Today I couldn’t speak about one single person or family, I can only speak about a community. There aren’t many times to see about half the people in a Gypsy community deciding to get baptised in the name of Christ, but this is exactly what happened in Rapa, this past month. The project will be well known to many of you, as it has been a highlight these past two years. Smiles built a Hygiene Unit and is now building 10 houses for that community and the future plans include a church building, as was mentioned last month in our Chief Executive’s update. But more than all the support we’ve provided over recent years, we have told people in the community about Jesus – and this is the one single point that can make a whole difference!

Pastor Vasile, as well as Nelu, Maria, Kevin and other colleagues too, continued to help people see God’s provision in all that was done and how much He wants everyone to have their lives changed. The nice houses are possible only because God loves them. The food parcel, the clothes, the medicine all the same.

Much to our surprise, when we told people from Rapa that we were thinking of organising a Christian baptism, they were not only interested, but mentioned specifically how much this means to them. They finally felt they were important enough for someone to consider this (even though they were never unimportant in God’s eyes!) and that someone is really caring for them. Immediatelly, they started submitting baptism requests to Pastor Vasile, but more than that, people from outside the community expressed their interest, being so exciting about the opportunity.

Eventually, on June 12th, the Christian Baptism service took place in Rapa. We were so delighted to be part of such an amazing and inspiring moment! And it could not go unnoticed the joy on everyone’s faces, I think there was not one soul witnessing who did not enjoy it, truely! The candidates, dressed in white clothes, nervous and excited at the same time, were a blessing for our eyes and their testimony of faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour was an encouragement for all present there – all for the glory of God. Everyone joined in praise and worship, there were many invited visitors as well as our mission trip guests, family members and friends, all with a heart, even though from such a different cultural and social environment.

The baptism in Rapa was a wonderful celebration for an eternal future. There is no past, no burdens and no dispair anymore. With Christ, those who are now brothers and sisters in Him will have a never ending hope, an everlasting joy and no matter how difficult life can be, there will always be something more to it – once started here on Earth, the eternity can only be glorious!

Praise be to God!
