Time to consider: what’s next?

After a very busy October, with teams and activities on all fronts, November came with a different type of challenge. We are now looking at how we can make things more efficient, more relevant for people while of course trying to keep costs down. We need to do that – such an exercise will reveal ways to better serve people, but will also help us understand what and how we can do to better utilise what we have.

This might sound technical. To an extent it is, but trying to improve our work by having a close look to what we have and how we can work with it, is also a matter of growing and becoming better in what we do. A sign of maturity if you wish, a responsible approach, because everything we do takes money, effort, time and emotional investment. Of course we are very happy to do what we do, but we need to see how we can improve even more, to obtain most and to deliver the best service to people.

I will not get into the financial aspect because Mr Hoy understands that best and has detailed the challenge and pressures we face. Please do ensure you have read the important message presented through our End of Year Appeal

I would rather write about the urge we have to do something and to not drop anyone off the support list, unless they really can deal with life better after being with us for a while. How could we choose not to help anymore, while there is still so much need? On what criteria? You have no doubt read and heard about the specific needs in every Smile’s project, the deficits and the balance between what we have and what we need to spend… I will not repeat all that either. But the support is needed and without it, there are less ways to do something of relevance for our beneficiaries.

I will write though about heart-warming smiles that children of Rapa will welcome us with in their community. To me personally and for many of you I’m sure, it is such a joy and blessing to see those children running and hugging us the moment we descend from our cars. Why do they do that? Because they love us and they know we love them! Nothing compares with their enthusiasm knowing these visitors are here not only for now, but will keep them in their hearts for ever!

I write thinking of the elderly in our centres that are so emotional when we go and visit them in their own rooms. They might have no one of their own families to come and check on how they are doing, but they know they have a real family with us, at all times. This is of such a high value to them, it is impossible not to consider it. We can think of the poor families that we visit every month and rely on our support for feeding their children. Or the homeless that finally have a place where to hide from the cold of the night. All of these are real people, with real feelings and emotions, giving us real issues to deal with. And they expect real support and guidance for their future.

This December will be a joyful time for everyone and we’ll try everything we can in order to make it a happy time for our beneficiaries. And it should be like that, as Christmas will remind us about the greatest Giver in the Universe. But what will be after that? How much will be possible to do in January? February? All next year! Now I think it’s a great time to consider how important is everything we do?

The next report will probably contain a lot of information on how the shoebox distribution goes and how great the Christmas celebration made us feel about it all. I know it will be so very exciting – so maybe even before that, we all would take a minute and contemplate what we are doing. And that, from my perspective, will reveal a great truth, an amazing realisation: we do change people’s lives! Sounds precious? I believe it’s simply a matter of fact. It is happening. And equally, all our lives were impacted and changed by getting to know people and their situation. Hardly one can stay the same after that.

What will we be doing next?

You are part of this amazing adventure, as I said before. And we are very grateful for this, as it enables us to do our best here. Please consider once again how important this is and realize what a great challenge and opportunity we have together: to make a difference that matters, the best way possible, to continue changing the world for as many people as we can!

May God bless you! Keep well!
