Report from Georgi Opreanu, Director of Elderly Care

New beginnings

Every time we start something new, it is good to look back, to see the paths we walk, the valleys we cross, the stones we stumble on, the mountains we climbed, the lessons we learned. This week-end we will open Phase II of Joint Facility of Love Ė the dementia wing and as Iíve looked back in the past, Iíve seen how God cared for us and provided at every step of the way. I can just thank Him for all He did for us. There were times when I thought this Project will never be finished and open, but God had a bigger plan and He never gives up on what He starts.

Five years ago (2011) when we started working with elderly at the small centre in Cihei Ė just 8 beds, we were preparing for a larger centre in Salonta. In 2013 we opened with 29 residential beds but God showed us the need was much bigger so we agreed partnering with Oradea Social Services and the Mayor office with a contract for 10 years (2014-2024) for a building offering 48 beds.

We learned over all these years many things that helped us to develop, to improve the service that we offer, with each centre we try to be better, to serve better and give the care each resident needs. One of the important things that we learnt in all these years is, in order to provide good care; we need a separate place for people with mental disability, for those who suffer Dementia and Alzheimer. The statistics are not encouraging as more and more people need special care. We find it hard to care for elderly with this disability in our current nursing homes, so we find it very appropriate to offer residents the special care in JFL II. Here we will be able to provide for all their needs and offer the special attention they need.

This week we have 5 new residents coming in the new centre and by the looks of the applications, by the end of the month we will be full. Currently we care in our centres for 78 elderly and more than 20% are social cases, they donít have any family, or the family donít care for them or they donít have the means to support financially the care in a residential centre. We are different to the other centres that exist in the area because we will never refuse a case just because they canít afford the cost of the care and this is because amongst you, are people with a big heart who are willing to help support their cost, being like a family to those without family.

So, as you know, this week end we have the opening and I want to thank all our friends from abroad who honour us with their presence at the Grand Opening; it means so much to me personally to know that we are not alone in the work and people are with us for this mission of helping others.

I also want to thank those that work so hard on various mission trips during the past years to help us to get to this point, for all the money and goods that you have donated, for finding other people to donate, for your personal generous donations that made this new beginning possible, for all your support in advising, encouraging or praying for us.

A special "Thank you" to those that made it possible to have a container full, and I mean full, of things that are so critically important for us, from beds to diapers, special creams, wipes, shampoo, cleaning supplies and so on. May God richly bless you all.

This last month, my Romanian colleagues impressed me with their willingness to come and help with cleaning, moving stuff around and doing everything that was needing to be done in order to be ready to receive the new residents in a clean and friendly place, so I want to thank them and let them know I appreciate all their efforts.

Last, but surly not least, Kevin and Maria need a big "Thank You" from me, and from all those that will benefit from the service we will provide in this new facility. For their passion for this place, for their dedication, for the effort and time they put in here to make sure everything will be ready and the residents will feel comfortable and find a new home when they come in the centre. This centre would not exist today if Kevin did not have the vision and the determination to see it finished and surely it will not look so pretty and homely if Maria wouldnít put her mark in decorating it!

As I was looking back over all the time from the beginning to now, the verse from 1 Samuel 7:12 came in my mind "Ebenezer, for he said, Up to this point the LORD has helped us!" (NLT). This is very true for us, the Lord helped us, protected us, cared for us and provided everything we needed in all this years. We pray for His help for the years to come as we try to be His hands and feet in serving the elderly and disabled of Romania.

Thank you all for fulfilling the role that God gave you in this mission of helping us here in Romania. I will never be able to thank you enough or repay what you did, but I know that God will bless you more than you can imagine.

With much appreciation,

Georgi Opreanu
