Report from Georgi Opreanu,
Director of Elderly Care
During recent days, the words of a song are in my mind, words that
are describing more than well my prayers... "One day at a time
sweet Jesus that's all I'm asking from you, give me the strength to do
every day what I have to do."
Caring for the elderly is not easy and there
are times when we feel the problems they have (physical, psychological
and spiritual) are beyond our abilities. In those times God is
reminding us, that we need to take each day and do what He calls us to
do, and He will give us wisdom to deal with all the issues we come
During the month of June we had the privilege of taking
care of 80 wonderful elderly people in both locations JFL Salonta and
ECO Oradea. Together with the blessing of having them in our centre we
were ready to offer medical, social, emotional and psychological
support. Moreover we are trying to be a spiritual support to each
individual, bringing hope and a new perspective into their lives.
A lot of things have happened during this
month, we have enjoyed a variety of activities together with our
elderly such as: gardening, trips to the park, fun and many craft
activities, along with Tuesday and Friday bible studies and the Sunday
Service at the local Church - but the best times we had were enjoying
the times with our visitors. The team that has visited were very
refreshing and encouraging. Together with them we have been able to
enjoy park walks, games and other entertaining activities. It’s been a
great blessing to have the teams from the USA (Ohio and Louisiana)
as our guests for our elderly in Salonta and Oradea. We hope those
visiting from Tennessee will be as great in July.
From the many stories that I hear each
month, the one that I’m about to tell you makes me wonder what would
happen with some people if The Smiles Foundation, one day, stopped
the second part of June, the Oradea social services notified us
about a lady from Oradea. She is 85 years and she was living alone in
an apartment, her husband died many years ago and since then she lived
alone. She spent most of her time, after her husband died, in the
hall corridor at the Mayor’s Office building, talking with the
security people, and because of that, everyone called her ‘Grandma
For the last 3 months she was most of the
time in hospital as she has a lot of physical problems, but also her
judgment is badly affected. Because of all these issues, when the
social services visited lady Terezia at home, they considered
her life was in danger and asked us to take her in the centre.
Thankfully we had a place in our Oradea
centre and on the same day we could accommodate her. For sure she
didn’t have an easy life and she was not treated with love in recent
years. We need your prayers in managing this case because she refuses
our help most of the time, often she doesn’t want to take her
medication or she will refuse to eat because she gets depressed by the
condition of her life. We need wisdom to know how to get close to her
heart and make her to feel our love. We are thankful for any little
progress we make, but we hope one day she will understand with her
mind and feel with her heart, that we are here to help her, to care
for her, to love her.
We got a ‘tip’ that she loves Sarmale
(Romanian cabbage rolls) so our cooks will give her every day "Sarmale"
and in this way at least her first desire is met. So please pray for
us, for a loving heart and wisdom to know what to do and what to say
in order for us to be a blessing for her life.
We also need financial support in order
to properly care for lady Terezia, because she is a social case
she can contribute only £70/$105, but the actual cost is £400/$600 per
month. If you think you can help us in sharing the cost for lady
Terezia please contact us and God will surly bless your life.
