Mission through Emergency Housing

Family

Families in need of Shelter : –

The Smiles Foundation is about more than providing aid for a quick fix solution to extremely complex problems. Homelessness through Eviction, Safe Shelter from Domestic Abuse are serious issues that need more than an arm of sympathy. Smiles responded in 2003 by purchasing land and a derelict building with a view to undergoing a total rebuild to provide an Emergency Housing facility which opened in 2006. Since then, many desperate individuals and families have found peace and security at Smiles EHU, giving opportunity to reflect, plan and move forward with rebuilt lives.

The building in this 2003 picture is as we purchased it, an abandoned building from what had been the Communist Offices and Police Station (pre-1989) under the former Communist State.

Smiles started a 3-year building programme which resulted in the initial facility, providing shelter for families and individuals in need of protection from either life on the streets or the horror of domestic abuse. In 2016, an extension was completed which added two family en-suite rooms increasing our ability to assist more desperate families.

The facility was first opened in May 2006, and we employed Facility Managers to oversee the facility and provide critical support and counsel for the residents. After 13 years in the position, Petru and Maria needed to retire on Medical grounds which created the opportunity for Smiles to assess the future potential of the facility. Whilst support is forthcoming, Smiles is committed to retaining the facility to continue meeting the need of Emergency Housing.

The ground floor of the original building provided Residential Social Care for those needing some assistance in life, but who could not afford regular residential facilities. The new addition in 2016 provided 2 large separate family rooms, each with en-suite bathroom that can support either Domestic Abuse cases or families in simple need of Emergency Housing.

The upper floor has a 2 bedroom apartment that was for the residential managers to live in.
