Luke’s mid-April News – Cycle Challenge

I hope everyone is well as they read this!

I am trying to keep myself productive at home in the UK. As many of you will know, I am more use to either working hard in Romania or travelling around the UK giving presentations about Smiles, both of which I thoroughly enjoy!

But now, like so many of us, I am trying to adapt to being in one location with a limited number of activities and jobs I can do, especially now that I have nearly finished redecorating the upstairs of my family home!
But more than that, everyone is feeling pressure of some sort because of this virus and charities are no exception! At Smiles we are still doing our utmost to meet the needs of the people in Romania across our projects and this has been challenged by the immediate crisis.

I trust you have seen the video that Kevin released on Wednesday (15th April) that spoke of the issue in more detail, but please take the time to check it out if you haven’t seen it!

The aim he talks about of feeding people, specifically children and young people, that normally rely on our projects for their daily nourishment is one that I can’t get out of my mind and fervently believe we should support.
Therefore, I am going to complete the Cycle Challenge fundraiser, ‘virtually’ of course because of the lockdown, going from our Smiles HQ in Leeds, England to our Romanian HQ in Cihei, Bihor County. A distance of 1,557 miles!

I will be doing this on an exercise bike and cycling around 50 miles per day. On the Challenge page you can see a full breakdown of my “journey” from city to city and how many days it will take to complete.

My question to you is can you help? Not just with prayers, though I will need them in covering that distance, but could you consider joining me? You don’t have to complete the whole distance, but could you cycle a section of it, from a city to city or even for one day?

I will be putting updates on Facebook to encourage others, and prove I am doing it! If you could do that, we can all support each other and raise money to feed the children in Tileagd, Rapa, Gepiu and more!

I have set up a JustGiving page to which people can sponsor me to complete this challenge. If you want to join me in cycling you can do and if we all ask for sponsors via individual JustGiving pages, we can hopefully raise the target that Kevin says is required, £3000 for the next month.

Lastly, if you feel you can’t join us in the cycling, then please donate and sponsor and encourage others to do the same? Together we can help people who are desperate in Romania and enjoy some exercise in our own homes!!

Thank you and God bless!
