For 10 years now, the Smiles Foundation has assisted hundreds of elderly and disabled people through our Residential Projects in Salonta, Oradea and Tileagd.
Currently, more than 120 residents live in these facilities, cared for by a wonderful array of staff, serving as Doctors, Nurses, Carers, Cooks, Cleaners, Social Workers, Security and Managers. More than 60 staff in total are devoted to these people they lovingly refer to as ‘our grannies’!
It wasn’t always this grand. In 2010, Smiles established a pilot project at our Cihei Site, officially 8 beds for residents and a small staff of 4 – who established the need in the community for such help and learnt some vital lessons on how to care in a facility not well established in Romania.
Agreeing the ‘need’ was substantial, Smiles went about designing its first ‘purpose built’ facility in the town of Salonta and raising nearly £1million ($1.3million) to see it built. Phase One with 30 beds was opened in 2013 and Phase Two with 13 beds for specialist care of Dementia was opened in 2016.
A beautiful family spirit exists in the Joint Facility of Love and those who call it ‘home’ are very thankful for the opportunity provided by the Smiles Foundation and our supporters.
