Report from Georgi Opreanu, Director of Elderly Care – January 2017
December is always a wonderful month with so many activities happening around us. We got into the habit of buying gifts for those we love and appreciate. But when we are caring for the elderly, we realise the most precious gift we can offer anyone is our attention. Jesus came on this earth to give each and every one the attention that we need in order for us to come to know Him and have salvation. It doesn’t matter how busy we are, we are not allowed to forget the reason we celebrate Christmas. Jesus came to bring Joy to the World and our duty every day is to continue to spread the joy that we receive from His coming.
We tried this month to organise many events in both our centres because we know it is hard to be away from home at this special time.
To mention just a few special events: Children from nursery and primary schools came carolling; Pastor Vasile came with the children who are adopted to present a beautiful Christmas programme; the kids from our Gepiu Community Centre , conducted by Ioana and Ligia, playing the scene of Jesus birth and brought cookies made by them as a gift for the elderly; traditional Romanian carollers and dancers, a group of recorder players/singers spreading the good news in the rooms for the residents; a group of high school students spent time with the elderly having a time to reminisce, mission trip guests from the UK doing crafts, giving gifts; different companies sending gifts and employees to sing carols; choirs from local churches binging joy in the hearts. One of most memorable events was a choir of 50 young people led by a national star, a singer very popular for the traditional Romanian songs he sings.
A special event was the 4th Edition of the concert “Home for Christmas” at our JFL, and not just because of the singers or the cakes and sweets served afterwards, but because many families of the residents came and participated with us. It was like a family reunion and we felt so good together. Indeed a wonderful time spent together with so many people.
I love December, I wish every month could be like December…but when I look to the month ahead of us, I start to be a bit sad. We leave behind a great month, when everyone was ready to respond to the needs, to do whatever needs to be done, to come and visit the elderly, and soon all this will be forgotten because the busyness of life will take its place and we forget that those around us still need attention. Maybe even more than before!
So please “Don’t save it all for Christmas Day, find a way, to give a little love every day; don’t save it all for Christmas Day, find your way, ’cause holidays have come and gone but love lives on if you give on …. Love.”
Let’s find our way to spread the good news every day, to show love and commitment to the people needing it so much, everyday – not just at Christmas. Let’s make 2017 count!!
My prayer for the New Year is that God’s presence will be with us wherever we go and whatever we do – to do it for His Glory!
I wish you all a blessed 2017

Please continue to pray for us to be able to bless the lives of the elderly that need our service.
•For loving and committed people who will work in our nursing homes
•For the health of residents, as many have flu and are not felling too well,
•For God to prepare the new residents who will come in the new centre and experience the love of God through the care we provide
•For the new residents to adapt in the centres;
•For God’s protection upon all of Smiles staff and beneficiaries;
•For sponsors for the social cases that we care for;
•For all Smiles staff to be a testimony of God’s love so others will get to know HIM.
Please pray for us because when you pray God hears more than what you say, answers more that we ask, gives more than we can imagine in His own time and in His own way.
